Едва ли можно в нескольких строках рассказать о Джеймсе Джойсе, одном из самых загадочных писателей не только британской, но и мировой литературы. Его книги, без сомнения, оказали огромное влияние на развитие прозы XX века. Однако, как это обычно бывает, они не сразу были высоко оценены читателями и критиками. Тем не менее, Джеймс Джойс продолжал развивать метод, в который искренне верил, - метод соединения реализма и символизма, а позже он стал мастером описания внутренней жизни в виде потока сознания.
Джеймс Джойс родился в в феврале 1882 года в Ирландии, в небольшом городке неподалеку от Дублина. Он был старшим сыном в многодетной семье, и его родители были уважаемыми людьми в городе. Однако через некоторое время ситуация изменилась, и семья стала нуждаться в деньгах. Чтобы заработать на жизнь, он давал уроки английского языка, некоторое время даже работал клерком в банке, отдавая в то же время все свои силы и энергию литературе.
